Name: Singapore Blue Tarantula (Lampropelma violaceopes )
Genus: Lampropelma violaceopes
Category: Spiders and Inverts - Arachinds
Origin: Asia, singapore
Lifespan: Female Tarantulas live up to 10 years+ but males live a lot less.
Average Size: This species can grow from 7 to 10 inches.
Description: This is a reltivley new and expensive addition to the hobby are is not easy to get hold of but is a extremley nice addition to any collection. Adults have a nice overall metallic blue/violet sheen to them and grow very big, There however are aggresive and not for beginners. If you can afford the prices for some of these they are well worth it. These spiders were uherd of untill the BTS show 2004. It took me a while to get hold of two spiderlings of this species.
Housing Requirements: Spiderlings can live in a small container with air holes in the top. Adults can live in a 10 gallon tank and bigger. This species requires a well planted terrarium with many spots suitable to build a web also a hollow log propped up against the side of the tank will do just as well. Height is more important to than floor space to this species. They also require a Substrata for the floor of the tank like peat moss, potting soil, wood chip or Vermiculite which is what I recommend as it holds moisture very well and doesn't encourage the growth of moulds or mites like potting soil. The substrata should be about 1 or 2 inches deep.
Light/Heating Requirements: A temperature of 75 to 85°F or 24 to32°C is fine.
Food Requirements: Spiderlings can eat pinhead crickets and other small insects, Adults will eat crickets, locusts, meal worms and other insects of equal size,
Water/Humidity Requirements: A humidity level of about 60 to 75% is fine.
